Synopsis

The demand for high-performance matte coatings continues to grow, particularly in the architectural and decorative wood coatings segment, where consumers increasingly seek both aesthetic appeal and durability. Traditional silica-based matting agents, while effective at reducing gloss, often compromise key performance attributes such as mar, scratch, and burnish resistance. A novel polyethylene-based micronized multifunctional additive has been developed to address these limitations, delivering not only comparable matting properties to silica but also offering superior durability and enhanced surface
performance. Key benefits include significantly improved mar and abrasion resistance, enhanced stain resistance, and increased burnish resistance in both clear and pigmented coatings. Additionally, this new additive features lower oil absorption, reducing binder demand and maintaining paint film strength. The wax-based technology also delivers higher clarity and better anti-settling properties. This presentation will review the performance benefits observed in waterborne acrylic systems, supported by comparative data across multiple test conditions, and explore its potential to meet unmet market needs for durable, high-performance matte finishes.
